The Wine
Experience
A to Zweigelt
Here
at the Wine Experience we won’t be satisfied until we
cover the whole alphabet when it comes to wine.
This time, it’s Z – from Zweigelt (that’s
zvi`-gelt), a wonderful Austrian wine.
It’s
a tremendously popular red in Austria and it’s just beginning
to show up around the US and in online wine sites. In
fact, it’s Austria’s red wine export hope.
And it’s a good one to hope about because it’s so
tasty!
Zweigelt
has a deep ruby red color that seems to glow when you hold it
up to the light. This is full bodied, full flavored wine with
flavors of red or black currant… or really ripe bing
cherries. You may find that its taste is kind of
like a merlot with some of the fruitier character of Zinfandel.
Zweigelt
is a hardy grape… after all, it has to be with the short
growing season and Austrian weather. Which is why it’s
now working its way into Canadian and New York’s Finger
Lakes vineyards.
If
you’re red lover, track down some Zweigelt for a try.
